The sports week was definitely entertaining as the NBA finally got down to its Final Four. The Indiana Pacers, behind the strong play of Lance Stephenson, took out the New York Knicks. And just like that the Knickstape has popped and the blue and orange skies have turned gray. The Pacers will now head on to face the Miami Heat, who blew away the Chicago Bulls in five games. And before the games even begin, the talk has begun. Pacers head coach Frank Vogel said that he views the Heat are “just another team in their way”. Well, LeBron James took exception to that statement and promptly stated that the Heat “were not just another team”. The comments were really much being made of nothing. But when these two teams get together, it always happens to be a physical battle. It should definitely be interesting to see how each team reacts to the physical play this series will surely bring.
While they wait to play in the East, Game 1 was played in the West on Sunday afternoon. The San Antonio Spurs, despite the higher seed, were thought to be the next victim of the Grizzlies by many people. It was expected that Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol would dominate Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies in Game 1, they had another thing coming. The Spurs, behind point guard Tony Parker, came in and outplayed the Grizzlies for four quarters on their way to a series-opening win. What was most noticeable about this game was the absence of big man Zach Randolph. The big man out of Michigan State seemed to be extremely bothered by the taller players of the Spurs and did not get his two points for the game until later in the second half. In order for the Grizzlies to be successful in this series, they must get Randolph going. Secondly, the Grizzlies have to find their men defensively. There were way too many times where the Spurs were wide-open and San Antonio made them pay immediately. The Grizzlies better hope their defensive rotations are tighter next game or Game 2 could be a repeat of Game 1.
Rob Gronkowski is a beast of a tight end. He is known as an interesting person that is known to party. Well, reportedly, the Pats tight end is going to have a fourth surgery on his forearm. It just seems like the forearm does not want to heal. The doctors went in and cleaned up the infection that was in there, inserted some new plates and also said his forearm should be just fine. The doctors can say what they would like, but there has to be concern in Patriotland in regards to Gronk. Not just with the forearm, but the party lifestyle that he has. He has been seen out partying it up a few times with that cast on his arm during the whole time he has been out. He isn’t supposed to be sitting at home locked in a room, but picking up people with a healing forearm isn’t exactly something that you should be doing. The Patriots invested a lot of money in Gronk, so they should start monitoring his behavior. Because eventually his “party hard” mentality could end up costing him and his team.
Offensive tackle Tyron Smith has been good for the Dallas Cowboys in his young career. This year he was informed that he will be getting moved to left tackle to protect quarterback Tony Romo. In his excitement, Smith text his family only to get back a question about dollars. This seems to be the norm between Smith and his family now. Smith’s family seems to have been after his money from the second he made it to the NFL. And what’s sad is they actually feel that they are entitled to his money without question. Personally, I feel bad for him and what he is going through. The moment you make it, you would think that your family would be the ones cheering you on instead of trying to use you as a bank. Unfortunately, this happens a lot with professional players and their families. Hopefully Smith can go forward with his career and not have this be a distraction that deters him from his dream.
Finally, it was thought that Coach K was done coaching international basketball after the 2012 Summer Games. The Duke coach went as far as to say that he was done. Well, apparently he has had a change of heart. Coach K is said to be mulling a return to the Olympic bench in 2016 and honestly, he is the best choice for the position. His teams seem to play as one out there on the court and he always seems to handle the personalities of the NBA players very well. Keeping the continuity of Coach K and his staff will do wonders for the USA Olympic team as the roster could look a little different the next time they take the court.
These are my thoughts and these are my words. Until next time……
