Preview: Georgetown vs Florida International

Coming off a loss to Kansas Jayhawks, the Georgetown Hoyas are trying to rebound as they face FIU Panthers. The Panthers have alternated wins and losses in the last six games resulting in a record of 8-5. FIU has lost three of the last six games, on average they’ve loss by 19.6 points per game. The teams they’ve lost to are Villanova, South Carolina, and Louisville.

Tymell Murphy and Rakeem Buckles lead the Panthers in scoring and rebounding throughout the first 13 games. Murphy averages 16.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Buckles averages a double-double with 14.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. As a unit their backcourt is averaging 30.7 points which is  pretty good.

Georgetown comes into this game looking to atone for the horrible loss against the Jayhawks,  Kansas guards destroyed the Hoyas backcourt. According to JohnThompson III, “the team was outplayed, and out-toughed.” The Hoyas look to get on the right track heading into Conference play.

The Jayhawks main options in the frontcourt are Joel Embiid, Tarik Black, and Perry Ellis. The trio combined for 39 points and 16 rebounds against a Hoyas frontcourt that includes Joshua Smith, Nate Lubick, and Mikael Hopkins. Against the Jayhawks, Georgetown’s front court finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The difference in production plays a huge role into that loss.

The Hoyas need to do three things to get a win against the Panthers. Rebounding is key for the Hoyas, getting out-rebounded  by 10 against the Jayhawks is not unacceptable, but it should’ve been closer than that. They should not allow Buckles to grab 10 rebounds. If they allow that to happen, then it is a problem.

The Hoyas need to be physical because John Thompson III wants to see how they respond they were anything but physical against the Jayhawks. They should come out with a physical mindset and can not afford a slow start.

Georgetown can not let the loss to Kansas affect their play today against FIU. They’ve had a nice break and should be ready to start battling because conference play is virtually here. That should be enough motivation because the conference is tough.

Georgetown will win this game with the score being 79-60. There might be a little rust, but Hoyas should be able to do enough for the win. The game might be competitive in the beginning, but Georgetown will run away with it in the second half.
