Under Williams, the Marquette Golden Eagles went to the NCAA tournament five times, including a Sweet-16 run in 2013. However, this season was mixed with disappointment, as the nation saw the Golden Eagles miss the tournament for the first time in eleven years. Despite starting the year as #17 in the AP Preseason Poll, Marquette finished with a 17-15 (9-9) record, and finished in sixth place in the newly re-constructed Big East. The team also failed to secure a spot in the NIT.
