The Dallas Cowboys finished the 2014 season with one of the best offensive lines in all of football, their commitment to getting better in the trenches played a pivotal role in their success last year. Today, they added yet another big piece to that dominant front in La’el Collins.
Heading into the 2015 Draft last weekend, Collins was considered as one of the top if not the top offensive lineman in the draft. He went undrafted due to a police investigation in his home town, his former pregnant girlfriend was murdered. The Baton Rouge police made it clear that he wasn’t considered a suspect, once he was done with questioning it was time to find an NFL team to call home.
Cowboys have signed La’el Collins, according to a source.

With the draft in the rearview mirror, teams began to contact Collins in hopes of landing the not so traditional undrafted free agent. Rex Ryan kicked things off by flying down to Baton Rouge to meet Collins, the Patriots and Dolphins were also interested per several reports. It began to turn into a college recruiting type deal, so Jerry Jones did what any big school would do and invite the player in for a visit. Collins landed in Dallas last night, the Cowboys took advantage of having him on their home turf and must have made a great impression. Collins signed a three year deal, giving him a chance to get to free agency sooner than his peers that were selected in the first round of this year’s draft. He may have lost millions on the front end, but a young offensive lineman entering free agency? If he lives up to his billing, that price tag will be at a premium.
Here’s the deal on La’el Collins deal with Dallas: Cowboys fully guaranteed the 3-year, $1.65 million deal, per source. Fully guaranteed. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 7, 2015
In the meantime, Dallas adds another first round talent to an already dominant offensive line. Collins can play both guard and tackle, the Cowboys selected Florida offensive lineman Chaz Green in the third round of the draft. It could possibly be Tyron Smith at left tackle, Travis Frederick at center, Zack Martin at right guard with Collins or Green winning the job(s) at either left guard or right tackle. The pedigree and talent of that line would definitely cement it as the best unit in football, the addition of Collins also gives Dallas one of the best draft hauls in the league.
So Cowboys come out of draft with CB Byron Jones, DE Randy Gregory, OL La’el Collins – three players once projected as first-round picks.
