Taking an early lead, the Terps were looking to establish themselves on both ends of the floor starting offensively, allowing them to set the tone for the remainder of the game. As the game progressed it became apparent the Terrapins were looking to impose their sheer will upon the Cornhuskers.
The Cornhuskers defense was simply outplayed by the Maryland offense. Unable to match Maryland’s high-octane attack shot for shot, the Cornhuskers were forced to play catch-up for the majority of the game. The need to get back into the game coupled with their struggles to score inside, forced the Cornhuskers to be one dimensional.
Senior Malina Howard, finished the night as the team’s leading scorer with 16 points and 6 rebounds for the home team. Howard was 7-of-7 from the floor on the night, knocking down every shot she attempted. Howard was a key component in Maryland’s victory, having reached double-digits scoring with 5:30 still remaining in the first half. Along with teammate Brionna Jones, the duo combined for 26 points. Accounting for 32% of the Terrapins total offense for the night.
In her post game interview, Coach Frese alluded to the notion “our most complete games”, which is a credit to her and the coaching staff in enabling the players to come together after a loss and rebound with a solid performance. They got back to playing “Maryland” basketball in the words of senior guard Brene Moseley.
Long term, this game will be a building block in what the Terrapins are hoping to accomplish this season. The Maryland culture has formulated into a winning dominance that was reinvigorated with their victory over the Cornhuskers. It is important to keep in mind that the season is filled with ups and downs, having the ability to display their mental toughness and resilience are key for any team with championship aspirations. With the season still in the infant stages, it will be interesting to see how the Terrapins build upon the victory moving forward.
