Walker-Kimbrough, Jones lead Terps past Sparty

Maryland’s Shatori Walker-Kimbrough continued her torrid pace of scoring, following up a 41-point outing with a 30-point outburst against Michigan State. She wasn’t alone as Terps center Brionna Jones had a monstrous 17 point, 17 rebound effort as Maryland won it’s tenth consecutive contest. Sparty didn’t go away easily, but Maryland would get the job done at home before heading out on the road to face the only team that’s beat them in conference play this season, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Terps came out early in the first quarter in a half court press, putting pressure on the Michigan Spartans up tempo offense. The Lady Terps crashed the glass picking up 11 in the first quarter. The Maryland offense came out hot with a lot of help from Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, racking up 12 points from the paint and perimeter in the first. The Lady Spartans shots were limited to the paint.

The Lady Terps found a rhythm in the paint coming into the second quarter. The Michigan State defense had a difficult time containing Brionna Jones, she had eight points in the second quarter. She also contributed to the Lady Terps defense, holding Michigan State to 12 points in the second quarter. The same rhythm that was in the paint was not out on the perimeter. The Lady Terps outscored their opponents 18 to 12– in the second quarter.

Both teams came out of the locker room fired up and exchanging shot for shot. After a while of going score for score both teams went null, until Walker-Kimbrough hit a three pointer that ignited her team again. From this point the Lady Terps took control of the game, and ran at their own tempo. Their man to man defense gave Michigan State troubles and caused to force a lot of their shots. The Terps ended the third on top 61-48.

It took the Lady Terps a bit of time to find their groove in the fourth, but when they did they did not let up. Michigan State’s offense was retained to the perimeter, and nothing was falling for them. They went 7 for 18 beyond the arc for the night. The Lady Terps ended the game playing a half court press, leaving the Michigan State offense unable to make a comeback. The Lady Terps defeated Michigan State 85-76 despite Aerial Powers 31 points for the Spartans .

Takeaways

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough is a scorer and the 41 points she scored last week was no fluke she put up 30 points tonight (That’s 71 in the last two contests).

Maryland’s defense gave their offense a lot of help with defensive and offensive rebounds along with timely stops.

The Lady Terps half court press is very effective in throwing their opponents off a rhythm.
