Jones, Walker-Kimbrough shine on Senior Day

On a special senior night honoring Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, the Terps came into this game ready to play after a crushing defeat to Ohio State (98-87) on Monday night. They won a share of the Big Ten Championship along with Ohio State. This is the third consecutive year in which the Terps finished with the regular season title, by way of a 93-60 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Obviously I’m really extremely proud of this team to be able to send our seniors out in just an incredible day” – Terps Head Coach Brenda Frese

From the very beginning, the Terps set the tempo with lock down defense as the Gophers shot 29.4% in the first quarter and outscoring them 26-12. Maryland would cruise to victory as the Seniors combined for 51 points, held the Gophers to 29.7% shooting for the game and contained their leading scoring Carlie Wagner (who averages 19.3 points a game) to five points on 2-13 shooting. With the level of defensive play and the offensive capabilities this team has, the Terps can use the upcoming Big Ten tournament to catapult their season into another level.

Senior Dominance: Seeing Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough not only get honored on senior night but get their jerseys hung up in the rafters was definitely a joy to watch. For four years, these ladies have done everything the right way and answer every task required of them. This game was no different combining for  51 points, 17 rebounds and 8 assists. In post game they said as much of a personal it is to get your jersey hung in the rafters, getting the three peat was just as big.

Destiny Slocum: This point guard is truly something special to watch. The way she was throwing long court passes in transition was in the same realm as Peyton Manning. Ok just kidding but that touch of precision and execution is something to marvel out. Her ability to lead on the court, is something everyone acknowledges and not to mention she is just as good as a scorer as well.

21 Turnovers: “21, 21, 21” and not referring to savage when I say this is a NO NO. Granted some of these mistakes came from trying to force plays to Brionna and Shatori due to senior night but some of them were inexcusable. I’m sure coach Brenda Frese will gut check these ladies long before the Big Ten tournament like she did late in the 2nd quarter during a timeout.
