D.C. United MLS

Rooney: “Cant wait to get on the pitch”

It’s been speculation for a while now, but earlier today the Black-and-Red landed one of England’s more decorated players. Joining D.C. United is 32-year Wayne Rooney, he’ll occupy a Designated Player spot on the roster. He can’t officially become part of the roster until July 10th, that’s the day the international transfer window opens. The Black-and-Red reached an agreement to sign Wayne from Everton F.C. on a permanent transfer and signed him to a three-and-a-half year contract.

There was plenty of excitement over the signing, earlier today fans showed up at Dulles International Airport to welcome Rooney and his family to D.C.  As for how this plays out on the field, time will tell. He’s obviously still a talented player despite his age, it’ll be interesting to see how he fits with Luciano Acosta, Yamil Asad, and Paul Arriola whether it’s in midfield or playing up high. There’s several options, but there’s more than enough time for all of that to play out. We’ll find out a bit more at Monday’s press conference.

“It is fantastic to be joining D.C. United at such an exciting time in the club’s history with the new stadium opening in just a few weeks. Moving to America and MLS fulfills another career ambition for me. I have the hunger to be a success here and will give D.C. 100 percent – as I have always done for every team I have ever played for. When I visited earlier this summer I was really impressed with everyone I met connected with the club, and of course the new Audi Field. Now I can’t wait to get on the pitch in a United shirt and join my new teammates to bring success to this club.” – Wayne Rooney

“Wayne is undoubtedly one of the best players in Premier League history and his goal scoring record for club and country speaks for itself. He is a world-class player and he elevates those around him, both through his work-ethic and winning mentality. We are beyond excited to add someone of Rooney’s caliber and we are thrilled to welcome him to D.C.” – Dave Kasper, United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations
