We are over the halfway point in the NFL season and things are starting to take shape.
So who is the best team in football right now? The New Orleans Saints, that’s who.
This past Sunday, New Orleans gave the Los Angeles Rams their first defeat of the season in a thrilling 45-35 game, moving the Saints to 7-1 and winners of seven straight.
What exactly makes the Saints the best team in football? Well there are a plethora of reasons for that.
First, the offensive line play has been arguably the best in football all season, as the unit has allowed just nine sacks. Having an all-world quarterback in Drew Brees stay upright is a big key to the team’s success.
Speaking of Brees, he’s having another stellar season throwing for 2,336 yards, 18 touchdowns and just one interception. He spreads the ball around and gets it out in a hurry. Often times when the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, Brees often gets overlooked and that is blasphemous.
The weapon that Brees has utilized the most is wide receiver Michael Thomas. Through the first eight games, Thomas has been targeted 79 times and has caught 70 of those passes for 880 yards and five touchdowns.
The case needs to be made for Thomas being the best receiver in football. He’s the most consistent receiver in the game.
Another weapon is running back Alvin Kamara who’s a year-and-a-half into the league, but he has proven in that time that he is one of the most lethal backs in football. The dual-threat back can do it all. He has 111 rushes for 490 yards and nine touchdowns to go with 51 catches for 437 yards and three touchdowns. Having such a threat has added much pressure on the opposing defenses.
After missing the first four games of the season due to suspension, Mark Ingram is coming along nicely for the Saints. In his first four games of the season, Ingram has rushed for 151 yards and two scores. He is the thunder to the lightning of Kamara.
The Saints also added former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, who New Orleans thinks can really elevate the offense even more so than what it is. Bryant is a big player maker and will take some of the load off of Thomas. The rich got richer with this signing.
Not only is the offense one of the best in the league, the defense is no slouch. New Orleans allows the fewest rush yards per game at 76.4 yards per game. Opposing teams have to abandon the run-game, which makes them one dimensional.
On top of having a great offense and a good defense, the Saints have a brilliant head coach in Sean Payton. He is the architect that makes this team go. The dynamic him and Brees have makes them one of the best coach/quarterback duos in the NFL.
So to recap, the Saints have arguably the best offensive line in football, an All-Pro quarterback, weapons galore on offense and a defense that can stop the run. That’s pretty impressive.
One last thing to note; the Saints are out on a redemption tour after they were heartbroken in the playoffs last January at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings. This team is on a mission to prove that was a fluke and they can take the next step in order to capture the Super Bowl.
The New Orleans Saints are the best team in football.
