The Philadelphia Union came into Audi Field and beat D.C. United 5-1 last night. Following the game Ben Olsen described this as a “moment” in his team’s season, there’s only two ways they can go from here.
This loss has the Black-and-Red just four points above the playoff line, this also puts their home record this season at 4-5-4 versus how they opened their new stadium last season with just two losses in 15 matches.
Things went wrong early with a misplayed ball by Donavan Pines leading two a goal by Alejandro Bedoya just a couple of passes later. Right before the first half came to an end, Fabian scored his first of two of the night with a late run into the box and one timed it past Hamid. Just five minutes prior, Junior Moreno was given a red card for tackling Kacper Przybylko. The reason in the box score was because Moreno denied him of an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
The Black-and-Red also lost Chris Durkin in the first half to an ankle injury. In terms of the severity, Olsen stated in his post game presser that Durkin’s injury was something to be concerned about.
For moments of the second half, it seemed that the home side started to get into the game. Playing a man down, meant having to chase the game a bit.
Fredric Brillant would tip in a rebound off a good header by Birnbaum in the 54th minute. The service was provided by Rooney via a set piece. D.C. United would get a few more chances, but each miss seemed to take whatever was left out of them.
Philadelphia continued to take advantage of being a man up, sending numbers into the box and peppering Bill Hamid with shots. Fabian would score his second in the 72nd minute and Fafa Picault added on the fifth goal in the 90th minute.
The Black-and-Red have just nine games left in the season, just four of which are at home. There isn’t much time left in the regular season and if they wish to get back to the postseason, they’ll have to close strong.
There have been a few reports of possible help on the way via the transfer market and Olsen definitely stated that they would take a look at all options as they now have little to no depth in the middle of the field with injuries to Canouse and Durkin. On top of that, Moreno’s red card will bring a suspension as well.
As Olsen stated last night, it’s a moment for his team and they can go one of two ways.
