Welcome again to another edition of General Thoughts and this week finds us all waiving goodbye to the NBA season. The Miami Heat, down 3-2 to the San Antonio Spurs, won Game 6 and 7 on the way to their second championship in a row. But while they are celebrating their championship, the rest of the NBA is making changes to get better. One team that is definitely trying to take it to the next level is the Los Angeles Clippers. They traded their 2015 1st round pick for the arguably the best coach in the game, Doc Rivers. And that move may only be the beginning for the Clippers. It is being rumored that Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe and small forward Caron Butler may be headed to Orlando for the services of shooting guard Arron Afflalo. Acquiring the veteran shooting guard would be excellent for the Clippers because he is a defensive upgrade over Chauncey Billups and he also can knock down shots that will help space the floor. And more importantly, this move may show prized free agent Chris Paul that the Clippers are serious about winning. Only time will tell what happens, but Chris Paul beside Arron Afflalo in the Clippers backcourt would be an excellent combination.
The Clippers weren’t the only one making some noise this offseason. Jay-Z has stepped into the sports management arena with Roc Nations Sports. He recently got approved to be an NBA agent and his first NBA signing was a huge one. Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Kevin Durant has now become the first NBA athlete to sign with Jay-Z. And instantly, Jigga has become a player in the sports arena. Jay-Z may be new to being a sports agent, but he isn’t new to being successful. He has done very well in everything he has touched in his career and this should not be any different. One thing that makes him stand out over other agents is the ability to help his clients branch out into other areas of business and help them expand their brand. And for Durant, who is looking to expand his marketing reach, could not have been a more perfect combination. Look for Durant to definitely take off in other aspects of business as a result of this deal.
In the NFL, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been making the news for all the wrong reasons. Recently, the police were searching the pond out behind Hernandez’s house. The police left with a few bags of evidence and still no arrest for Hernandez. It’s always said that people are innocent until proven guilty, but Hernandez isn’t doing himself any favors in the court of public opinion right now. He handed over a cell phone to the police in pieces and the surveillance equipment in his home was also damaged. Hopefully some resolution comes to this, but we all keep forgetting about the victim in this whole incident. Semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was murdered. Let’s not be so caught up in the plight of Hernandez but the sorrow of Lloyd’s friends and family. My thoughts and prayers go out to them during this difficult time.
Finally to some good news this week. Not long ago, NFL Hall Of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly was diagnosed some cancer in his jaw. It was thought that he would have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation to get rid of the cancer. Well, after having surgery to remove those cancerous cells, the doctors have told Kelly that he is does not have to have that radiation treatment because the surgery got all of the cells. This is excellent news for the once great quarterback of the Bills. He will have a checkup in two months to see if the cancer returns, but all signs point to him being cancer-free. In the world we live in with hurt and pain happening all the time, it is excellent to see someone get some good news. Congratulations to Jim Kelly and family on the good news!
These are my thoughts and these are my words. Until next time………..
