The Georgetown Hoyas beat the tenth ranked VCU Rams 84-80, D’Vantes Smith-Rivera fueled he Hoyas win with his 26 points. The grit and grind came in the second half as each team made a run, the VCU defense was as good as advertised.
Smith-Rivera played a good game today along with Markel Starks, who added 23 points. The backcourt duo combined for 49 points against a tough VCU defense that caused the Hoyas to commit 26 turnovers .The difference in this game was the Hoyas ability to make shots down the stretch, Georgetown shot close to 56 percent. On the other hand, VCU shot just 35 percent. The backcourt duo of the Hoyas was doing everything right, but they did turn the ball over often. It wasn’t all their fault, but when VCU plays defense like that, it turnovers are almost inevitable.
The Pick-and-roll was pretty effective for the Hoyas today. Every time it was run with Starks and Joshua Smith, it resulted in a layup or a trip to the free throw line. Smith finished with 17 points and shot 90 percent from the field.
The Rams leading scorer for today’s game was Briante Webber, Webber scored 22 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. VCU was running a full-court press for most of the game. At the beginning of the game, the Hoyas were not getting the ball over the timeline as fast as they would have liked.
Overall, this was a good game from the Hoyas. They were efficient from the field and made baskets when it counted down the stretch. Even though there were 61 fouls in this game, the Hoyas found a way to win. The Hoyas won’t travel for the next four weeks coming off their trip to Puerto Rico.
