NIT: Georgetown is the last Big East Team Standing

Florida State is a four point favorite over the Hoyas according to Vegas, Georgetown played West Virginia in the their last game at McDonough Gymnasium. As the sole Big East team left in either tournament, Georgetown is trying to continue their run at an NIT crown.  The Seminoles are the No. 1 seed in this tournament and beat a tough Florida Gulf Coast team of 58-53 last Monday. In that game Aaron Thomas led the team with 22 points.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks will need to have a good game tonight  because the Seminoles have a good backcourt. Thomas and Ian Miller are both averaging more than 10 points a game. Florida State’s Okaro White is a good forward because of his mobility and his ability to score in the paint.  The Seminole defense ranks 31st and opposing teams only average around 65 points a game. The Hoyas offense needs to run smooth if they want to have a chance to win this game.

Three things the Hoyas will need to do is attack the paint, take care of the ball, and get the ball inside to their bigs. When the Hoyas attack the basket, they score or get to the line and shoot free throws. Also, they can’t turn the ball over against a team that only gives up 65 points a game. The Hoyas have had issues turning the ball over at times this season. Getting the ball inside should allow the big men go to work, if they get doubled then it would help the guards because they can move the ball  on the perimeter and score. The Hoyas have been good at shooting the ball late in the shot clock.

You can catch tonight’s game on ESPN. If the Hoyas win, they will play at Madison Square Garden against Louisiana Tech. Tech is a 3 seed in this tournament. If the Hoyas can pull this win off tonight, it will be  good for them and the Big East Conference.
