Troy’s Take: Redskins- Texans Week 1

Final: Redskins 6 Houston 17

• First off I will say the Redskins did not look as bad as the final score indicated
• Let’s start where everyone always seems to start when talking about the Redskins: RG3
• RG3 completed 29/37 passes for 267 yards … I thought Redskins reporter for Player Insiders Emmanual Benton said it best “Robert Griffin III was efficient with what he was asked to do. However, he wasn’t impactful.”
• I preached patience in the offseason and it’s something the Redskins will have to be all season long, RG3 is making the transition to a “pocket passer” and inevitably mistakes will be made… thought he did a good job of spreading the ball around but would like to see him “give up on” a play and not be afraid to throw the ball away
• Moving to the run game I thought Morris (14 carries, 91 yards) and Helu (4 rushes, 46 yards) were reliable per usual
• Thought Gruden abandoned the run too early, even he said in the post game presser on Monday that “If I had to do it all over again, I probably would have run the ball more than I did”
• O-Line stunk but I expected that against a nasty Texans front 7, obvious weak link in the offense
• Sucked to see Jordan Reed (mild hamstring strain) go down but that’s why you acquire DeSean (8 catches, 62 yards) and Andre Roberts (1 catch, 22 yards)
• Good time to say I really like Andre Roberts in the return roles, he finished with 92 return yards on four returns (2 punt, 2 kickoffs)
• I liked what I saw from punter Tress Way (5 punts, 246 yards, 49.2 average, 2 inside the 20)
• But besides that the special teams was awful again and cost the Skins another game… can’t have a blocked extra point and a blocked punt in a four minute span
• Moving to the defense, hats off to Haslett and his unit
• Defense bent but did not break and kept the Redskins in the game
• D-Line was as good as advertised, Hatcher didn’t miss a beat despite limited preseason action
• Again sucks to see a guy you were counting on to contribute like Barry Cofield (ankle, placed on short term IR and is not eligible to return to practice until after Oct. 19) go down … I think Chris Baker can fill the void but there’s really no depth behind him
• Really liked the young secondary players: Amerson, Rambo, Breeland
• Thought on the Hopkins touchdown Fitzpatrick had way too much time, can’t expect a safety to run with a shifty wide receiver for that long but glad Rambo took the criticism post game
• Quick notes on the linebackers thought Keenan Robinson was fantastic, gives the Skins the sideline to sideline speed at inside linebacker that they so desperately need… on the other hand I thought Orakpo was awful, didn’t look like a guy fighting for a new contract.

In the end I thought it was a decent effort. I have the Redskins at 6-8 wins in 2014 and they played like a 6-8 win team on Sunday: 1. Had more penalties than Houston 2. Lost the turnover battle 3. 3/12 on third downs offensively.
