Annapolis, MD – Tuesday morning was day number two of U.S.A. Women’s Basketball training camp at the Naval base in Annapolis. Before the start of practice the team was briefly addressed by Sgt. Major. Bryan Battaglia, who is the senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chariman of the Joint Chiefs of staff. He stoutly explained what it means to represent your country and the profound effect it has on this nation whether you know it or not [Paraphrased]. Many of the athletes were just as big of fans of the midshipmen as the midshipmen were of theirs. The team then took the floor and began their normal practice routines, which is stretching followed by cone drills. During this time we had the chance to sit back and observe the level of focus these ladies brought to practice. After stretching and cone drills coach Auriemma broke the ladies off into three groups of five to work on executing his more than credible offense. As I mentioned in a previous article this U.S. Women’s team is loaded with oodles of talent at every position. While dry running the set plays you could feel the intensity, the emotion, and just the overall hunger these ladies have during this process. Even the older veterans that have seniority are still looking over their shoulders due to the array of talent here in Maryland. Not to mention seven players haven’t even reported to camp yet as a result of playing in the WNBA Finals. Of those seven players possibly three of them could be shoe in selections for coach Auriemma ( Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, & Elena Delle Donne) so as you can imagine spots are limited. Heading into day 3 of practice and the showcase Thursday night (ESPN2) I’ll be monitoring closely with an eagle eye the player positon battles. The U.S. Women’s team takes the floor for practice tomorrow morning at 11:00am ET at Halsey Gym at the U.S. Naval Academy.
