Caps look to extend streak to four

The Capitals have been hot as of late, currently on a three game winning streak. They look to make it four in a row this afternoon as the Philadelphia Flyers come to town. The Flyers are coming off a loss and look to get a win to get back on track.

Washington’s second line has been playing well as of late, Troy Brouwer, Jason Chimera, and Evgeny Kuznetsov have played a huge role in this three game win streak. Routinely generating scoring chances during their time on the ice and capitalizing on a few of those chances.

The Flyers are trying to keep their fleeting postseason hopes alive, it will be tough to do that against a rested Braden Holtby. He got a chance to rest as he sat out the last game and Philipp Grubnauer came up from the AHL to get a start. In Holtby’s last four starts, he has a .49 goals against average. He’s been nothing short of stellar, there’s no reason to expect his level of play to tail off.

Holtby isn’t the only net minder that has been playing well recently, Philadelphia’s Steve Mason has been great since the start of the year. Posting 1.511 goals against average, his play factors in to the Flyers playoff push. However bleak it may look at the moment.

Alexander Ovechkin has been on a different level since the start of the new year, in January he scored 12 goals in 14 games. In the four games played this month, Ovi has three goals. That would make any opponent nervous, but the Flyers should be concerned with a much more important stat. Ovechkin has scored 28 goals in 35 career games against them, that’s just scary.

A win today gives the Capitals a chance to extinguish what’s left of the Flyers playoff hopes, Philadelphia trails Washington by seven games and 12 points. A win also helps the Capitals close the gap on the division leading Pittsburgh Penguins, trailing them by just two points.

Today’s game starts at 3 pm Eastern, do you think the Capitals will push their win streak to four? Or will the Flyers keep those playoff hopes flickering for another day? Leave your thoughts below in the comments section!
