Opare: ‘It was just a great feeling to definitely score and get the team back in it’

The Black-and-Red pulled off an impressive rally to get the 2-1 result against the Orlando City FC, United Head Coach Ben Olsen addressed the media after the game. Kofi Opare tied up the game with his first goal of the season and kept up his strong play, he shared his thoughts on the team’s performance as well. Miguel Aguilar and Michael Farfan answered questions about their impact on the game as well.

Ben Olsen

On team’s second half response after going down 1-0 in the first half

A little lethargic in the first half, some new guys in there. A touch rusty from the start, some relationships that were off, but I didn’t think it was the end of the world the first half. I think it was a little bit of a fortunate bounce for their goal and give the kid credit, it was a very good goal. We were just off in some of the final stuff, in some of the class that I thought we actually had in the second half. We just took care of the ball a little bit more, we were patient and urgent in the way we broke them down. I thought it was a very good second half, the subs bring just what we need subs to bring. Rolfe brings his class, Miguel brought an energy and a feistiness, a youthful feistiness that the game needed. Jairo comes in and makes a wonderful pass to Rolfe, so overall we’re happy with the points and turn around and go to Philly.

On the depth of the bench now that team is the healthiest it’s been all year

It’s nice, you look at the bench and the quality that can come into a game and Fabi’s not even on there. It’s a good problem to have and I’m looking forward to watching some of these guys who haven’t gotten a lot of minutes be incorporated and show the fight to be in that starting 11 when it’s all said and done. It also give me the luxury to, tonight, chose Taylor Kemp over Korb. Wasn’t because Korb played bad, it’s just Taylor needs to be a part of this team and get minutes. Same with Silva, we got to get him in at some point and everyone’s going to contribute and hopefully it’ll be a good marriage and we can all get along in the process.

Miguel Aguilar

On getting extended minutes for the first time this season

It was exciting, I got some pretty significant minutes so I was happy about that. I felt good, I thought I came in and I helped out the team, gave them a little spark. When you have guys on the field like Rolfe, special guys that can make things happen, playing is that much easier.

On his style of play, his willingness to create for teammates

I’m a very attacking minding player, I love going at players, I love trying to score goals and setting teammates up to score goals. That comes easier to me than defending, we’re 1-0 down, I just came in with the mentality to play free. We need to get a goal back, we need to get a win.

Michael Farfan

On halftime adjustments, difference between United’s play

I think we knew we had to change a couple things, we went out and did that. We had to keep the ball a little better, we had to attack a little bit more. We put them on their heels in the second half, we were able to go at them and things worked out. We got the three points.

On DC’s ability to not only tie the game but complete the rally with a win

I think we showed that we’re a really good team, we showed that we have quality on this team. Whether it’s the guys that are starting or coming off the bench and I think we’re the real deal. I think we have players that can win a championship and hopefully we keep on doing what we’re doing.

Kofi Opare

On matchup with Orlando’s Larin

He’s definitely a good player, obviously he’s physical, he’s good with his feet and he’s quick. He’s pretty quick too, as a team, as a unit we worked well in neutralizing him. Obviously he got that goal, which was unfortunate but I think for the majority of the night we did a good job of containing not only him, but Kaka and Brek Shea and the two subsitutes that came on. I think it was a collective effort, that the guys did a good job.

On emphasis in game plan to limit Kaka, Shea and others that gave DC trouble in first matchup

To be honest with you, in the first half  they had too much time on the ball. In the second half I think our performance was different, we limited their touches in the midfield and forced them to play in the back or out wide. But we knew if they were going to carry it up, it would be in the middle and the guys in the middle did a great job. Davy and Perry of limiting their touches on the ball, so I ‘ll say it was a collective effort.

On his first goal of the season and the equalizer in the game

Honestly it was just a great ball by Taylor, my job was pretty easy. Just had to put my head on it, the ball was perfect from Taylor, I give him a lot of credit for the ball. It was just a great feeling to definitely score and get the team back in it.

On team showing a killer instinct after tying the game

To be honest with you, it speaks volumes about this group. Obviously, the never die attitude to battle back. Goes to show you all about that, we go down a goal, heads could have fallen. Instead the guys kept on working and got the victory.
