Reigning champs upset in season opener

The reigning champs looked to start the season in good form, but 1st Class had other plans as they were able to take down the champs in the season opener.  The game did feature a nice matchup between two attack minded point guards between 1st Class Lo and J&R Mob’s Tay Twyman. Despite Tay’s game high 28 points, the reigning champs fell 89-81.

The youngsters jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, their youth and energy was a huge factor early on as J&R’s Mob started out stiff. The veteran laden squad got back into it a little more than halfway through the first half. Cutting a once 15 point deficit to just 10, forcing a timeout from 1st Class.

With 5:16 left in the half, the champs tied the game up at 28. The youngsters didn’t have the same energy as they did at the start of the game as the grizzled vets were able to get back in transition and slow the game down. After going nearly four minutes without a basket, Lo answered the bell with a much needed score. The game would go back and forth as neither team could get the required stops to go on a run.

The second half started with Tay continuing where he left off, cooking! As he stayed hot for the champs, he got help as Folarin Campbell entered the game as a late sub and promptly offered some help in the scoring department.

1st class responded after going down 13 after a three form Tay. The youngsters found that energy they had lost and never looked back. They were able to get back in it on the defensive end. With 5:05 left in the game, 1st class found themselves down just three, 68-65.

From that point on, Lo went super nova and started to hit three after three to change the game. Just under two minutes left, 1st class re-took the lead, going up 80-78. There were several possessions from J&R’s Mob that were wasted by the ball sticking too much. A three from 1st class pushed the lead to five, then they got a stop on the defensive end.

The veterans were trying to get back in the game so they started to double Lo and it opened things up for his teammates who knocked down a couple of triples which cause the  margin of victory. It was a great win for the 1st class, but expect J&R’s mob to round into form later in the year.
