United begins play in Champions League, Korb lost for the season

D.C. United begins play in the 2015 CONCACAF Champions League tonight in Panama City, they’ll be facing Árabe Unido. They’ve already played their first match, beating Montego Bay United to the tune of 3-0.

The Black-and-Red were knocked out of this tournament in the quarterfinals last year, they expect to do more this year and are certainly capable of doing just that. The Panamanian side has a couple of explosive forwards to keep track of in Enrico Small and Renan Aldes. A stout midfield that includes Jose Gonzales as well, so United will have to play with that “chip” on their shoulders as Coach Olsen mentioned after their last game. A 3-1 loss to New York City FC in MLS play last week.

D.C. lost more than just the game last week, fullback Chris Korb was injured. It’s been announced by the team that he will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. he’s started 17 games this season. He will definitely be missed, fortunately for D.C, they got Sean Franklin back a couple of weeks ago so it will most likely be him and Taylor Kemp at those wide back positions.

United has suffered what has seemed to be a never-ending carousel of injuries this season, although Korb’s is the most severe to this point. Expect them to do what they do best, keep trucking along. It’s a deep roster, veteran laden roster that isn’t phased by much outside of the task at hand. Fully expect them to regain their focus they lost against New York City FC, they’re a their best when pushed or backed into a corner. It’s a gritty, blue-collar team that relishes in proving others wrong. So Árabe Unido should face a motivated side in the Black and Red.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2 at 8pm EST.
