This is the bottom isn’t it?
Two days after getting drilled at home by the surging Seattle Seahawks, General Manager Ozzie Newsome signed Ryan Mallett. The quarterback had previously worked out for the several teams including Baltimore. Mallett, the former blue chip college prospect, had previously been cut by Houston this season due to a fall out with coach Bill O’Brien mostly regarding his lacking professionalism.
Despite his lack of success in the NFL to this point, the former Patriot draft pick is admittedly one of the more talented throwers in the NFL. The 6’6, 250-pounder has as strong of an arm as you’ll find and his size allows him to make any throw needed. In five games with Houston this season, threw for 770 yards with a three- to-four touchdown-interception ratio. The more concerning stat is the 53.1% completion percentage, very inadequate considering the league’s current rules against defenders.
Ultimately, this is a very small move. However it’s a total Ravens move, Ozzie Newsome is the king of low risk moves like this. If Mallett makes any positive contributions beyond being an emergency Quarterback this season, it was a roaring success. If he doesn’t, the Ravens really didn’t give anything to get him and can cut him without penalty.
This is a reminder that Mallett will be behind Matt Schaub and Jimmy Clausen at the position (shrugs).
Please help support me in the #TankRavensTank movement so that we can get a chance at one of the blue chip prospects in this class that we so desperately need.
