Taking a look back at the Championship Round of the Dunk Contest

The 2016 Slam Dunk contest was arguably the best in history, and certainly made up for some of the recent lackluster contests. It didn’t have the star power names like Vince Carter, Michael Jordan, or Dominique Wilkins, but from a creativity standpoint, the dunks that Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon brought out in the championship round surpassed its predecessors.

Let’s take a look back at all of the dunks in the championship round and break each one down:
Gordon’s 1st Dunk of Championship Round-

Based on creativity, this was an amazing dunk. If you look closely, Gordon cocks the ball with his right hand while already spinning in the air all while bending his  left arm behind his head a la mailman Karl Malone. You also have to factor in the perfect timing that he jumps and securing the ball from the outstretched hand of the twirling mascot.

LaVine’s 1st Dunk of Championship Round-

Official judges’ score: 50

My personal score: 48

This was a great dunk, and was basically the same 360 cuff dunk that Gordon did just without the mascot. But honestly, I don’t believe it was as impressive as Gordon’s because he didn’t use his off hand or have to navigate a spinning mascot. It also feels like I’ve seen that dunk performed before as well. Gordon wins the matchup on style points for me.

Gordon’s 2nd Dunk of Championship Round-

My personal score: 50!

I mean, come on! Gordon easily (and I mean easily) cleared the mascot while jumping, extending his legs, and smoothly maneuvering the ball under his body only to bring it up for a lefty slam. He was basically SITTING in mid air!!!

LaVine’s 2nd Dunk of Championship Round-

The bar was set high, and Lavine just matched it with this dunk. He planted his left foot on the free throw line and then windmilled with one hand!! The leg strength and bunnies you have to posses to make a dunk like that is ridiculous. He looked like he floated to the rim. Just crazy man!

While impressive , I’m not sure this one deserved a 50. The judges must have wanted the contest to go on further.

This was definitely worthy of a 50! Coming from behind the backboard with a dunk is tough enough, but to put it between your legs and get both arms back up is mighty impressive. It just speaks to LaVine’s crazy athleticism.

Gordon’s 2nd Dunk-Off Slam-

This dunk was so underrated! Cocking it fully behind your head and bringing it fully down requires a ridiculous amount of hang time. I can’t believe the judges thought this was only worth a 47.

This was the winning dunk for LaVine. I saw him do something like this a couple summers ago, but to do it on such a stage made it even more impressive.
