Turnovers play a large role in blowout loss to Sparks

The Mystics fall to 0-3 as they never got it going against the Sparks. Former Maryland star Kristi Toliver lead all scorers with 19 points, Jantel Lavender had 12 off the bench. Candace Parker had 8 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in just 21 minutes as they got their second blowout win in as many games this season. The following are some takeaways from Friday’s matchup.

Sloppy Defense: The Sparks finished the game with 28 assists to the Mystics 14 which is in large part to the ball movement LA displayed. It seemed like the Mystics looked lost on defense as the Sparks had their way with them.

Latta’s impact: These first three games show Ivory Latta’s worth to this team. I cannot imagine the Mystics getting blown out by 30 at home with her on the floor. Last season, every time the Mystics looked as if they lose control of the game, she would come up with a big play. As she sits out due to injury for the first month, we have to see if the Mystics can bounce back without her.

Rookie got heart: Mystics rookie showed a lot of heart in the loss. She finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals but she was everywhere on the court defending Parker and Ogwumike staying with them. Look out for her as she will only get better throughout this season.

Sparks look legit: We know they have only played two o games but they look like they are in midseason form and their dominance so early in the season should put everyone in the league on notice. Wouldn’t surprise me, if they challenge the Lynx’s reign as WNBA Champions.
