Knicks fill a need by trading for former MVP

Former 2011 NBA MVP Derrick rose is a member of the New York Knicks after being traded from the Chicago Bulls yesterday afternoon.

For those who don’t remember, Rose has been through a well documented injury history. Tearing his ACL twice and his meniscus, despite his injuries and even at this stage of Rose career he still can be a difference maker at the point guard position for the Knicks.

This may not be the leagues youngest MVP anymore, or possess the same other worldly athleticism, but he still has the skills which made him a great player in this league. Put down the numbers for a second, if anything he’s improved at the little things after injuries. Not much has changed about Rose’s game or style of play,he has gained a better perimeter jump shot to go along with that attacking the basket brand of basketball he likes. It may be more floaters than dunks, but he was still aggressive when attacking last season.

Rose can still drive to the basket and finish with his strength more than athletic explosion. Good in the pick-and-roll, more than capable passer and a mid-range game that is still smooth. His presence can take pressure off Carmelo Anthony by being the the leading playmaker and primary ball handler for four quarters. The Knicks needed to add another go-to guy that can take the ball and just score like Melo does.

Regardless of injuries, Derrick Rose’s name still has star quality attached to it which the Knicks can market with to their fans assisting with getting people back into the seats of the Garden. More importantly this move is an selling point for potential free agent moves this summer, you can now come to New York to play with Rose, Anthony and Porzingis.

The Knicks now are in possession of perennial all star scorer in Anthony, developing first round pick Kristaps Porzingis and now Rose. That should be enough to draw a young star or fringe star. Nearly every team hopes to be in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes, but it’s a long shot  for the Knicks. A player like Demarr Derozan could be an option or they could try and work a deal with restricted free agent Bradley Beal if they want to pay the price to bring in more talent.

The pieces the Knicks continue to gather this offseason will make this trade worth it all at the end. Of course a lot of this, well a big chunk of this is if Rose remains injury free. They can’t be expecting finals appearances or for Rose to return to his MVP form, but he gives them more talent than they’ve had at the position in quite a while. This along with a few other moves, could be enough to get New York back to the post season. Phil Jackson has more work to do if he wants to really make the Knicks a threat to the Cavs, but for now fans can take the proceed with caution tape off their ticket purchases, New York has a team to cheer for again!

This is a remarkable article and not because your my son….ha, ha!! Seriously, I love Rose at the point guard position for the Nicks and one thing I would like to add is once a MVP, always a MVP! Folks don’t take stock anymore in experience over “what looks good for now”! I encourage NY to stand proud on their choice in Rose, in hopes in works out to a championship real soon! Love you Tevin and that’s my (2) cents!
