The Maryland Lady Terrapins basketball team held their annual media day on Tuesday afternoon.
Here’s what you need to know:
FRESHMAN, FRESHMAN, and MORE FRESHMAN
Head coach Brenda Frese enters her 15th season as the leader of the Lady Terps. It’s debatable as to whether she’s had a more highly touted freshman class than this year. The class is ranked first in the nation and includes three McDonalds’ All-Americans.
Frese couldn’t hold back her enthusiasm for such a highly regarded class.
“It’s obviously an exciting piece, this year’s freshman.” said Frese. “When you talk about them, the things that come to mind for me are, they’re fearless, they’re workers and they’re extremely competitive.”
Leading the youngsters will be freshman point guard Destiny Slocum, who was ranked seventh overall in her class by ESPN. She’s the quintessential run-and-gun point guard and has incredible strength for her position.
She’s just as advanced in speaking to the media and was confident when speaking about the team’s camaraderie this early in the season.
“Our chemistry is great right now, so I can only imagine what it’s going to be come conference time,” said Slocum.
A deep freshman class can cause some contention with upperclassman in terms of playing time, but this team is euro-stepping (actually took a team trip to Italy this offseason) their way around those concerns early.
Despite having such an elite freshman group, the team will definitely rely on returning seniors Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (both selected to preseason All-Big Ten teams) for their experience.
The consensus among the ladies is that Walker-Kimbrough will be the go-to leader for this group. She knows how important the freshman group is (she shares a room with one this year) to the success of the team.
“We’re trying to get our freshman rolling and get that team chemistry right and I think we’ll be fine,” said Walker-Kimbrough.
The ladies will look to establish a healthy balance between freshman and seniors before December, when they have to travel to Louisville and host Connecticut. They will get a great opportunity to do so in the South Point Shootout tournament in Las Vegas, starting on Nov. 25.
If they have as much fun as they did here:
