100 and Counting for the Uconn Womens Program

On Monday night, the top ranked Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team won their 100th consecutive game. This historic milestone makes them the first team men’s or women’s, in NCAA history to accomplish this. They 6th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks stood between them and history. Uconn Had won its previous 99 games by a combined average of 38.7 points and winning 147 of its last 148 games overall.

Several of the storied programs former stars came out to support the Huskies, including Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Tina Charles, Morgan Tuck, Kalena Greene, Bria Hartley. There was more alumni in addition to those that were named in attendance, the Huskies beat South Carolina 66–55 for the teams 100th straight win.

Leading scorer Katie Lou Samuelson had her worse game of the season, as she missed her first eight shots before scoring her first bucket with 6:54 left in the third quarter. She came into the game averaging 21.4 points per game, but only finished with just 6, going 2-for-12 from the field. Gabby Williams picked up the slack with a monstrous double-double, 26 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies also got a strong game from Napheesa Collier, with 18 points and 9 rebounds before she fouled out.

UConn last loss came in overtime against Stanford on Nov. 17, 2014. This current streak started shortly after that on Nov. 23, 2014 with an easy 96-60 win over Creighton. Connecticut had 27 wins over ranked teams and 9 wins over top-five opponents during the streak coming into Monday’s game. According to coach Geno Auriemma referred his previous teams as unbeatable stating:

“I have had some teams that were so good that we could not lose,” Auriemma said. “I never wanted to say that but we knew it because we were that good, that talented and that committed. But then some teams need to get beat in order to reset them and face reality. Hey, this is the real world. If you play great, you have a chance to win, but you might not. If you don’t play great, you have a good chance to lose. Then you have to figure it out. I think that needs to happen.”

Connecticut has gone on several 70 game win streaks in the past, what’s been most impressive is the group that continued this streak. The previous four seasons were historic, the freshman class of Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck, and Moriah Jefferson went 4-for-4 in winning National Titles while on campus. That streak was started with that group, this current group were more of a supporting cast their first two seasons on campus. For them to all take on new roles and flourish in them has been special, how long will the streak last?
