Historic day for D.C. United, break ground on Audi Field

“As the nation’s sports capital, we are proud to break ground on D.C. United’s new home” – Mayor Muriel Bowser

The Black-and-Red and their supporters no longer have to wait, on Monday afternoon they held a ground breaking ceremony for Audi Field. What once felt like nothing more than an idea or dream has come into fruition for D.C. United and their supporters, as stated by Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, “This stadium project has been a long time coming.”

The new stadium is a few blocks from Nationals Park, it could be seen from the site of the ceremony. To say there was a palpable buzz in the air would be a severe understatement.

There were cheers for Head Coach Ben Olsen when he came to the podium, “Benny Olsen” was chanted from some of the supporter groups in attendance. “The fans deserve this stadium more than anyone” said Olsen. “It will be one of the great joys of my life to watch the fans make Audi Field one of the best atmospheres in the country.”

Bill Hamid delivered a great speech, sharing his memories of the organization and what it meant to him growing up as a fan and as a homegrown talent. Here’s a portion of his heartfelt message, “I can’t wait to experience the Screaming Eagles, La Barra Brava, the District Ultras, and all D.C. United soccer fans bring the best atmosphere in MLS to our new home, Audi Field. I hope Audi Field can give generations of young boys and girls the motivation RFK gave me to go after my dreams.”

We’ll have more coming from this monumental day later this week with a video recap. Below is a short photo gallery from our Travis Ellison.
